Coco Betaine is a mild, coconut-derived amphoteric surfactant widely used in personal care and cleansing formulations. It is valued for its gentle cleansing action, rich and stable foam, compatibility with a wide range of surfactants, and ability to improve the overall mildness and sensory feel of cleansing products.

Coco Betaine works particularly well when combined with anionic surfactants such as SLES and other mild surfactants. It can help reduce the harsh feel of stronger cleansing systems while contributing to foam quality and formulation viscosity.

It is suitable for a wide range of hair, skin and cleansing products, including shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, liquid hand washes, shower gels and baby cleansing products.

Key Benefits

  • Mild and gentle cleansing action
  • Excellent foam booster and foam stabilizer
  • Helps improve the richness and creaminess of foam
  • Can enhance the mildness of anionic surfactant systems
  • Helps improve viscosity in many surfactant-based formulations
  • Provides a pleasant, soft after-feel to skin and hair
  • Compatible with anionic, non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants
  • Water soluble and easy to incorporate into aqueous formulations
  • Suitable for a wide variety of personal care and cleansing products
  • Particularly useful in mild shampoo, body wash and facial cleansing formulations

Recommended Applications

Coco Betaine can be used in:

  • Shampoos
  • Mild shampoos
  • Baby shampoos and washes
  • Body washes
  • Shower gels
  • Facial cleansers
  • Hand washes
  • Bubble baths
  • Liquid soaps
  • Hair cleansing products
  • Other rinse-off personal care formulations

Recommended Usage

Typical usage ranges may be:

Shampoo: 5–15%
Body Wash / Shower Gel: 5–15%
Facial Cleanser: 3–10%
Liquid Hand Wash: 3–10%

Some commercial grades may be used at higher or lower levels depending on their active matter and the desired cleansing and foaming performance. Always follow the technical specification of the specific grade being used.

Solubility

Soluble / readily soluble in water

How to Use

Coco Betaine can be added directly to the aqueous phase or surfactant phase of a formulation.

  1. Add Coco Betaine slowly to the water phase or surfactant blend.
  2. Stir gently and continuously until evenly incorporated.
  3. Avoid excessive high-speed mixing, as this can create unnecessary foam during processing.
  4. Add other surfactants according to the formulation procedure.
  5. Add heat-sensitive ingredients, botanical extracts, fragrances or essential oils during the appropriate cooling stage.
  6. Adjust the final pH of the finished formulation according to the intended application.
  7. Check viscosity, appearance, stability and preservation before finalizing the product.

Coco Betaine is highly water soluble and is generally compatible with anionic, non-ionic and other amphoteric surfactants.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a tightly closed original container.
  • Keep in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area.
  • Protect from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures outside the supplier's recommended storage range.
  • Keep the container closed when not in use to prevent contamination.
  • Do not allow the material to freeze.
  • If the product becomes hazy or develops temporary changes after exposure to cold temperatures, allow it to return gradually to room temperature and mix gently before use, provided this is permitted by the supplier's TDS.

Formulation Note

Coco Betaine is particularly useful as a co-surfactant in cleansing systems. When combined with anionic surfactants, it can contribute to improved foam quality, viscosity and overall mildness. The final formulation should always be evaluated for pH, viscosity, microbial stability, preservative efficacy, packaging compatibility and overall product stability.
