About Walnut Oil

Walnut oil is cold-pressed from the kernels of Juglans regia, the Persian or English walnut, a tree that originates from Iran and Central Asia and has been cultivated for centuries across the Himalayan belt of India, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Kashmir walnut oil carries a strong regional heritage identity and is one of the more distinctly Indian-sourced specialty carrier oils. The oil has been used in traditional Indian and Middle Eastern wellness practices for skin and hair care alongside its culinary applications.

Walnut oil is notably high in linoleic acid, which typically makes up around 50 to 60% of its fatty acid composition, alongside oleic acid at around 15 to 25% and alpha-linolenic acid at around 10 to 15%, making it one of the few carrier oils with a meaningful omega-3 content. This fatty acid profile gives it good anti-inflammatory and emollient properties, particularly relevant for dry, sensitive, and eczema-prone skin. It also contains significant amounts of vitamin E, polyphenols, and melatonin, contributing antioxidant activity. The melatonin content is particularly interesting for anti-ageing formulations given its documented role in skin repair and protection against UV-induced oxidative stress.

Working with Walnut Oil in Your Formulations

Walnut oil works well in facial oils, serums, body oils, balms, and emulsions, and is particularly suited to formulations targeting dry, sensitive, inflamed, or eczema-prone skin where its anti-inflammatory omega-3 content is most relevant. It also performs well in haircare, particularly in conditioning treatments for dry or damaged hair. Its Kashmir origin makes it a strong regional storytelling ingredient for premium Himalayan-inspired natural skincare lines.

Quality & Formulation Notes

The tree nut allergen declaration is mandatory on any finished product containing walnut oil, regardless of usage percentage. Its high polyunsaturated fatty acid content makes it one of the less stable carrier oils, so antioxidant protection in the formulation and cool dark airtight storage are important for preserving shelf life. Cold-pressed versions are preferred for retaining the oil's full polyphenol and vitamin E content. Batch variation in colour and scent is normal and does not indicate a quality concern.

Applications

Skin Care Formulations: Facial serums, anti-ageing creams, body lotions, massage oils, foot and body butters

Hair Care Formulations: Hair oils, scalp serums, leave-in conditioning treatments

Cosmetic and Soap Making: Carrier base for essential oil and aromatherapy blends, soap making, lotion and cream oil-phase ingredient

General Use: Bulk supply for cosmetic manufacturers, DIY skin and hair care kits, salon and spa product formulations

Packing and Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the container tightly sealed when not in active use. Recommended storage temperature below 25°C. Refrigeration is acceptable for extended shelf life. Best before 12 months from packaging date. Natural variation in colour and scent between batches is characteristic of a cold pressed, unrefined oil.

Caution

Walnut Oil is derived from tree nuts and may not be suitable for individuals with a tree nut allergy. Patch test is recommended before use on skin. In case of any allergic reaction, discontinue use immediately and consult a dermatologist or physician.
