Product Description:

Sesame Oil is a cold pressed carrier oil extracted from the seeds of the sesame plant (Sesamum indicum), one of the oldest cultivated oil-bearing crops in human history, with roots tracing back to the Indus Valley civilisation. Known in Ayurveda as the King of Oils, sesame oil holds a central place in traditional Indian wellness practices, often serving as the base oil for herbal infused preparations due to its natural compatibility with botanical extracts. The oil is golden to light brown in colour with a mild, nutty scent and a smooth, medium consistency. At Maduras Herbals, we supply Sesame Oil as a raw material for cosmetic manufacturers, DIY formulators, hair care brands, and Ayurvedic product developers looking for an authentic, traditional carrier oil from India.

About Sesame Oil

Sesame oil is one of the most well-known carrier oils in Asian cosmetic and culinary tradition, and India is one of its most significant producers. It shares a number of properties with olive oil, including a broadly similar fatty acid profile and a meaningful antioxidant content that gives it good stability despite being classified as unstable for oxidation. It has a high content of vitamins E and K, and contains two unique lignan compounds, sesamolin and sesamin, that have demonstrated antioxidant activity in in vitro studies and may make it particularly beneficial for mature and stressed skin.

For skin, sesame oil works as a softener and moisturiser and is effective in addressing dry, sensitive, and itchy skin conditions. It is a popular choice as a carrier for botanical macerations, where its staying power and medium absorption rate make it well suited to the infusion process. It is also widely used in massage oils, where its texture and skin feel translate well to professional body work applications.

Working with Sesame Oil in Your Formulations

Sesame oil works well in anhydrous products such as balms, masks, butters, and scrubs, and can also be used in emulsions and haircare products. It is a particularly good choice as a carrier for botanical macerations, and its texture and feel make it well suited to massage oils and body care formulations.

Quality & Formulation Notes

No adverse effects or formulation restrictions are documented for sesame oil. Its strong seed-like scent is worth factoring in during development, as it can come through in lighter-fragranced finished products. Despite being classified as unstable for oxidation, its lignan content provides some natural antioxidant protection that helps with shelf life management.
