Product Description:

INCI Name: Glycolic Acid

Chemical Formula: C₂H₄O₃

Molecular Weight: 76.05 g/mol

Appearance: Typically a white crystalline solid in pure form. Commercial grades may also be supplied as clear aqueous solutions, depending on the concentration and grade.

Category: Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) / Cosmetic Exfoliating Active

Glycolic Acid is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) widely used in cosmetic and skincare formulations for its exfoliating and skin-renewing properties. It helps loosen the bonds between dead skin cells on the skin's surface, encouraging their removal and promoting smoother, brighter-looking skin. Due to its small molecular structure, Glycolic Acid can penetrate the outer layers of the skin effectively when formulated at an appropriate concentration and pH.

It is commonly incorporated into facial serums, exfoliating toners, creams, lotions and chemical peel formulations designed to improve the appearance of uneven skin texture, dullness and superficial pigmentation.

Functions

  • Exfoliates dead skin cells from the skin's surface.

  • Helps improve the appearance of dull and uneven skin tone.

  • Promotes smoother-looking skin texture.

  • Helps reduce the appearance of superficial pigmentation with regular, appropriate use.

  • Supports the improvement of the appearance of fine lines associated with photoaging.

  • Can function as a pH-adjusting agent in suitable cosmetic formulations.

Applications

Glycolic Acid is used in facial serums, exfoliating toners, face creams, body lotions, skin-renewal products and professional chemical peel formulations. Its concentration and application method should be selected according to the intended product, finished-product pH and applicable safety requirements.

Solubility

Glycolic Acid is highly soluble in water. It is generally incorporated into the aqueous phase or pre-diluted in water according to the supplier's formulation guidelines. It is not oil-soluble.

Recommended Usage

The appropriate usage level depends on the ingredient grade, intended application, finished-product pH and applicable cosmetic regulations. For consumer leave-on products, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review safety assessment supports concentrations up to 10% at a final pH of at least 3.5 under specified conditions. Higher-strength peel formulations require additional safety controls and professional handling.

Formulation Guidelines

  • Check the final pH of the finished formulation.

  • Assess compatibility with emulsifiers, thickeners, preservatives and other active ingredients.

  • Introduce the ingredient according to the supplier's technical data sheet.

  • Evaluate finished-product stability, viscosity and skin compatibility before commercial use.

  • Avoid combining multiple potentially irritating actives without appropriate compatibility and safety assessment.

Skin Compatibility

Glycolic Acid may cause stinging, redness, dryness or irritation, depending on its concentration, pH and frequency of application. Appropriate formulation and skin-tolerance assessment are essential.

Precautions

Avoid contact with the eyes and application to broken or irritated skin. Use appropriate sun protection during use and for one week after discontinuing AHA-containing products. Higher-strength chemical peels should not be used without appropriate professional guidance.

Storage

Store in a tightly closed original container under the temperature and handling conditions recommended by the supplier. Protect the material from contamination and use compatible packaging.

Shelf Life

Refer to the manufacturer's recommended shelf life, expiry date or retest date for the specific commercial grade. The shelf life of a finished cosmetic formulation must be established through appropriate stability testing.
